Thangal Kunju Musaliar College of Engineering(In malayalam ടി.കെ.എം. എന്‍ജിനീയറിങ്ങ് കോളേജ് )or TKMCE, founded in 1958, is the first government aided engineering institution in the private sector in the state of Kerala, India. The college is located at Karikode, six kilometers from the city of Kollam(Quilon) in southern Kerala. The foundation stone was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the erstwhile President of India on 3 February 1956.

The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala. Admission to the college is based on entrance examinations conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations, Kerala. The college is preferred by most students who write the entrance examination and most of the students who join the college have secured ranks below 3300. [1]

Institution

The foundation stone of TKM College of Engineering was laid in 1956, by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. The college was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, the Cabinet Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs on 3 July 1958. The main building is designed in the grand medieval Mughal architectural style with courtyards, around which are spread the departmental buildings, library block, laboratories, workshops and hostels.

The college started with a student strength of 120 and a faculty of six, offering courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The college now has a strength of more than 2000 students with about 200 faculty, supported by 136 non-teaching staff. The College has laboratories and computer facilities.

The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1983. A library with a collection of technical books and periodicals was launched as part of the celebrations. In July 2008, the college celebrated its Golden Jubilee with an extravagant event attended by leaders including Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and premiers of technological institutes, companies and states.

The institute offers B.Tech programs in eight branches of engineering, two M.Tech programs and a Computer Applications(MCA)Program . The programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation(NBA), All India Council of Technical Education(AICTE), New Delhi.

Location

The college is located at Karicode, a suburb town of the coastal city of Kollam on the Kollam-Schencottah NH-208 road. There is a railway station at Karicode called Kilikollur railway station. Direct trains connect Kollam Junction Railway station to all important cities of the country. The college is six kilometres away from Kollam city centre(Chinnakada)and the institution is within easy reach, as a number of KSRTC as well as private buses regularly reach the college.

The international airport at Thiruvananthapuram is 70 km away and the Kochi Harbour is 160 km north. The Kollam Techno Park is 9 km from the college.

Founder

Thangal Kunju Musaliar was born into a middle class family at Kollam on 12 January 1897. In his days Kerala dominated the cashew export trade, a field he pioneered. By 1940, he was one of the world's largest employers, employing over 100,000 people. In 1956 Mr. Musaliar formed the TKM Educational Trust to cater to the educational needs of the people of Kerala. The Trust established institutions such as TKM Institute of Technology, TKM College of Engineering, TKM College of Arts and Science and TKM Institute of Management.

Mr. Musaliar is the author of the book "Man and the World, Practical Philosophy and Law of Nature" (1949).

Admission

Admission to the college is based on the competitive Common Entrance Examination called All Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination administered by the Government of Kerala, India. Only the top 1-5% of the exam takers are admitted to the college.

Department of Electrical and electronics engineering(commonly known as EEE) is a course offered by the college from its start itself.

Department of Computer Application

Department of Computer Application is the oldest post graduation department at TKM College of Engineering. TKMCE MCA department have alumni in almost all big IT companies. The department lab is one of the biggest and finest lab of the college.

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the oldest departments, established in 1956. The department has an intake of 120 students for B.Tech (Civil Engineering) and 18 students for M.Tech (Structural Engineering and Construction Management). The department has labs in all disciplines which caters to the need of the undergraduate and post graduate students. The Department is a Research Centre of the University of Kerala. Department of Mechanical Engineering

The department was established in 1958. The department offers two B.Tech programs (Mechanical Engineering and Production Engineering) and one M.Tech program (Industrial Refrigeration and Cryogenics). The department is a Research Centre of the University of Kerala. Department of Chemical Engineering

The department was started in 1980. It has links with industries, academia and R&D organizations such as those of Kerala Minerals and Metals, VSSC, Kochi Refineries, RRL, Hindustan Latex and Binani Zinc. During summer vacation, the students are given in-plant training in these organizations. Students are exposed to the industrial environment through projects performed under the joined guidance and supervision of the faculty and industrial experts.

The department has a student chapter of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. The Regional chapter of IIChE helps to arrange seminars, industrial visits and workshops for students. The Chemical Engineering Students Association of TKM arranges Chemfest, a technical symposium held annually, which draws participation from all over India. The KRL-TKM ENCON CLUB of the department organizes energy and environment conservation awareness programmes both inside and outside the college.

Placements

The college is an approved CAP centre, NATA centre, research centre of University of Kerala. The college is an approved consultancy centre & testing centre to Indian Railways, BSNL, L & T, RITES, ISRO, IOCL, LIC, KSEB, IRE, Harbour Engineering dept.,KWA, PWD etc.

The college is visited by many of the top companies in the country.

Alumni association

The Alumni Association was formed in 1963. The chapters of the association are spread around the world. TKMCE Alumni Global Association (TAGA), was formed on September 8, 2004 as an internet based initiative to link all the alumni. TKMCE Alumni UAE is one of the major alumni association based in UAE which came into existence in 1987, as an auxiliary unit of TKM Alumni Association Kollam. It has more than 1000 members.
